In a bid to bolster food production and support local farmers, the Government has announced a comprehensive set of agricultural interventions for Wakenaam, Region 3.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha revealed the plans during a recent community outreach event, where he engaged with farmers to address their concerns and outline strategies for agricultural development.
Among the initiatives, the Government will provide essential tools and equipment to five farming groups, facilitating their operations and enhancing productivity.
Additionally, efforts will be made to clean and maintain drains and sluices, crucial for effective water management in agricultural areas.
Addressing specific challenges faced by farmers, Minister Mustapha pledged to investigate the causes of plant deaths reported by some growers.
A dedicated team will be dispatched to assess the situation, analyze the factors involved, and provide necessary assistance to affected farmers.
Highlighting infrastructure development, Minister Mustapha announced plans for the construction of the Free and Easy sluice, with a budget allocation of $30 million.
This project, currently in the design phase, signifies the Government’s commitment to improving irrigation and drainage systems in the region.
In addition to infrastructure, the Government aims to support farmers with access to fertilizer and machinery, aiding in the reclamation of farmlands lost to waterways.
Minister Mustapha emphasized the importance of transitioning from primary production to value-added agriculture, stressing the need for agro-processing facilities to add value to local produce.
Furthermore, collaborative efforts between the government and residents will focus on the development of reservoirs for fresh water in Wakenaam and Leguan, ensuring sustainable water resources for agricultural activities.
With these comprehensive interventions, the Government aims to boost agricultural productivity, empower local farmers, and promote sustainable development in Wakenaam.
