Government to Strengthen Asset Recovery Operations in Collaboration with Law Enforcement

The government of Guyana is taking strategic measures to enhance the capacity of local law enforcement agencies in conducting effective asset recovery operations, ultimately leading to increased convictions.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, emphasized the necessity for more successful prosecutions in asset recovery cases within Guyana.

During the Financial Investigation and Asset Recovery Workshop, he affirmed the government’s commitment to improvement in this regard.

While Guyana boasts the most modern Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML-CFT) legislation in the Caribbean, a review by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) identified some areas in asset recovery efforts that require attention.

AG Nandlall underlined the need for a unified approach to combat organized crime effectively.

He emphasized that targeting criminals’ assets is one of the most impactful ways to retaliate against them.

The government plans to provide extensive training for law enforcement officials to combat these high-profile criminal activities.

Properly trained officers are anticipated to lead to more cases being prosecuted in the courts.

Nandlall stressed that as these efforts are implemented to enhance asset recovery, the laws governing this process will be rigorously enforced.

He also emphasized the importance of conducting asset seizures in accordance with the law.

This initiative follows a familiarization training session conducted for judicial officers, magistrates, and financial organizations.

The three-day workshop, organized by the government of Guyana in collaboration with the Regional Security System-Asset Recovery Unit, aims to strengthen the capabilities of various law enforcement agencies.
