Government to Pursue Interim Court Order Amid Concerns Over Teachers’ Union Influence

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo

The Guyanese government has expressed concerns regarding the potential influence of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) on the nation’s educators amid ongoing strikes.

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo addressed these concerns during a recent news conference, highlighting the government’s stance and actions moving forward.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the government’s belief that the current teachers’ strike holds political undertones and suggested that opposition elements may be encouraging other unions to join in industrial action.

The government asserts that the legal avenues available to address such disputes have been fully exhausted.

Legal advisors have advised the government that Guyanese laws do not support the principle of compensating employees for work not performed during strikes.

This perspective underscores the government’s position on the compensation of striking teachers.

In response to the ongoing situation, the High Court has intervened by issuing an interim order for mediation between the government and the GTU.

The objective of this mediation is to facilitate constructive discussions aimed at resolving the dispute and ensuring the prompt return of teachers to classrooms.

Senior Counsel Edward Luckoo and Robin Stoby have been appointed as mediators for this process.

A meeting between representatives of the government and the GTU has been scheduled for Friday morning.

This mediation session is anticipated to provide a platform for meaningful dialogue and negotiation, with the ultimate goal of reaching a mutually acceptable resolution.

Despite the challenges posed by the teachers’ strike, the government remains committed to addressing the situation through legal channels and constructive engagement, prioritizing the interests of both educators and students.
