Government to Offer Financial Support to Mahdia Fire Victims’ Families

The Government of Guyana has announced plans to provide significant financial assistance to the families who tragically lost their children in the Mahdia dorm fire.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall stated in an interview that this decision comes in direct response to the families’ expressed needs.

Following the devastating incident at the female dormitory of Mahdia Secondary School in Region Eight, the government aims to offer financial relief to the affected families.

Attorney General Nandlall emphasized that the families are deeply affected and in need of assistance, and it is the government’s responsibility to support them during this challenging time.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the government has requested that the families sign an agreement after receiving independent legal advice. These agreements also acknowledge the government’s commitment to providing ongoing support as needed.

Furthermore, Nandlall clarified that the financial assistance being provided to these families is unrelated to the intended commission of inquiry.

The Mahdia dorm fire claimed the lives of 20 children, including 19 girls and the son of the dorm mother.

A 15-year-old girl has been charged with 20 counts of murder and has been remanded into juvenile custody.
