Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton has unveiled plans for the expansion of skills training facilities across Guyana, aiming to bolster opportunities for skills development and employment.

In an exclusive interview with NCN, Minister Hamilton disclosed that ongoing construction projects in Region 6, including New Amsterdam and Corentyne, and Unity Mahaica will be complemented by the establishment of new facilities in Region 1, Port Kaituma, and Region 3, Parfait Harmony.

The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing the services of the Board of Industrial Training (BIT) nationwide, ensuring broader access to skills development initiatives for Guyanese citizens.

Minister Hamilton emphasized the significance of these expanded facilities in motivating individuals to invest in their skills development, thereby increasing their employability and contribution to national development.

Additionally, the ministry is dedicated to providing training opportunities for retirees, recognizing their wealth of experience and potential to contribute to various sectors of the economy.

Regarding retirement age policies, Minister Hamilton highlighted the need for adjustments, noting that the current range of 55 to 60 years old was established during colonial times based on life expectancy.

With life expectancy now ranging from 65 to 70 years old, the government is actively considering revisions to retirement age regulations to better reflect contemporary realities.

These developments underscore the government’s commitment to human development and capacity building, aiming to equip Guyanese citizens with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in today’s dynamic job market.
