Government to Expand Landfill Sites, Establish Recycling Facility

By Saskia Warrick | January 3, 2025

The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has announced plans to develop additional landfill sites and establish a recycling facility as part of a nationwide effort to improve solid waste management.

New landfill sites are being developed in Regions 2, 5, and 7 to address improper garbage disposal and enhance the country’s environmental sustainability.

Currently, there are 13 landfill sites nationwide, with over $809 million spent last year on their maintenance.

The initiative aligns with President Irfaan Ali’s strategy for improved waste management, according to Local Government Minister Sonia Parag.

Minister within the Ministry, Anand Persaud, noted that targeted interventions have already led to visible improvements in cleanliness in Regions 2, 3, 5, and 6.

Additionally, the Ministry is in the process of developing a recycling facility at the Haags Bosch landfill site, which will focus on processing plastic waste.

This facility aims to reduce pollution and support environmental conservation efforts.

Over the past four years, the government has invested more than $4 billion in solid waste management to create a cleaner and healthier environment across Guyana.
