In response to numerous complaints and instances of contractors breaching their contractual obligations, the government is taking decisive action to ensure accountability and transparency in public projects.
Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, announced these measures during an episode of ‘Issues in the News’ on Tuesday.
Nandlall revealed that cabinet has directed ministers and heads of departments to activate contractual provisions when contractors breach agreements or cause unexplained delays.
This directive aims to address citizens’ grievances and uphold the integrity of legally binding contracts.
To enforce accountability, the government plans to impose penalties on delinquent contractors.
These penalties may include liquidated damages, contract termination, and legal action to claim damages.
Nandlall emphasized that the process of enforcing these penalties has already commenced.
Contractors may receive written notifications or opportunities to remedy breaches before facing penalties, depending on the terms of their contracts.
The government is resolute in its stance against delinquency, breaches, or negligence by contractors involved in public projects.
By enforcing contractual obligations, the government aims to safeguard taxpayers’ funds and ensure that public projects are completed efficiently and effectively.
