The distribution of the one-time $100,000 cash grant to eligible Guyanese adults will commence shortly, according to PPP General Secretary and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

Speaking at a media conference, Dr. Jagdeo assured the public that stronger systems are now in place for verifying eligibility, which will help reduce delays in the disbursement process.

The cash grant is expected to benefit around 600,000 individuals and will cost more than the originally planned $60 billion.

Dr. Jagdeo explained that the government already maintains databases of eligible adults, which will streamline the distribution.

He also outlined the expected methods of distribution, noting that the majority of grants will be issued via cheque, while cash distribution systems will be set up for residents in hinterland areas.

The General Secretary addressed concerns regarding the frequency of the cash grant program, stating that it would be implemented periodically.

He emphasized that this method of distributing $100,000 to every adult is part of the government’s efforts to ensure a transparent and equitable development process.

The initiative, initially announced by President Irfaan Ali as a $200,000 household cash grant, was later revised following public feedback, including concerns over false tenancy agreements and utility bill transfers.

The change to providing the grant directly to individuals was intended to address these issues.

Dr. Jagdeo also reassured that the program is designed to be fair and transparent, aligning with the government’s broader development goals.
