The government has announced its decision to appeal the ruling of Justice Sandil Kisson, who favored the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) in a recent legal dispute.

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Senior Counsel Anil Nandlall, expressed the government’s intention to challenge the ruling, citing significant legal errors made by the judge.

Nandlall emphasized the unique nature of the case and the necessity for a thorough review due to multiple perspectives and bases for appeal identified.

In response to Justice Kisson’s ruling, which followed extensive court proceedings including mediation and submissions, Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde, representing the Teachers Union, hailed it as a landmark decision affirming workers’ rights under the law.

President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union expressed anticipation for the outcome of the appeal process.

The legal dispute arose when the GTU took the Ministry of Education to court over the government’s threat to withhold pay from striking teachers.

While acknowledging teachers’ freedom to strike, the Attorney General maintained that they do not possess an inherent right to strike.

The decision to appeal underscores the government’s commitment to addressing legal concerns and upholding its stance on labor disputes.
