Government Prioritizes Learning Environment, Education Minister Responds to Criticism

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, defended the PPP/C Government’s commitment to enhancing learning environments amid criticism from Opposition Member of Parliament, Coretta McDonald.

McDonald contended that the government’s focus on building schools overlooked the crucial need for teacher training in this year’s budget.

In response, Minister Manickchand highlighted the challenges faced upon the government’s return to office in 2020, emphasizing the need to fill 7000 seats for secondary school students, particularly in Hinterland communities.

The Minister clarified that the allocation of $28.7 billion for school development in the current budget aims to construct new secondary, primary, and nursery schools across the country.

Of this amount, $16 billion is designated for new secondary schools, $3.1 billion for primary school buildings, and $3 billion for nursery schools.

The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing infrastructure deficits.

Addressing criticism regarding teacher livelihoods, Minister Manickchand outlined measures to enhance the well-being of educators.

She mentioned incentives such as duty-free concessions for senior teachers above 52 and financial support for teachers in training.

The Minister revealed that 1796 teachers were trained last year, with 1900 and an additional 1500 set to undergo training in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Minister Manickchand asserted the government’s unapologetic stance on prioritizing the learning environment for pupils and students.

The ongoing efforts aim to bridge gaps in infrastructure and ensure a conducive atmosphere for education across Guyana.
