The government of Guyana is moving forward with its plan to distribute a one-time cash grant of $200,000 to all legitimate households across the country.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo announced the initiative, addressing key questions around the distribution process and confirming that eligibility will not be limited solely to those with utility bills in their names.
In a press briefing, Dr. Jagdeo explained that an extensive database is being developed to identify eligible households, with electricity bills as one of the verification methods.
The government estimates around 240,000 households could qualify based on utility data.
Additional verification methods will be used, particularly in hinterland regions, where village councils will assist in validating eligible recipients.
Dr. Jagdeo also noted that the Audit Office of Guyana and a dedicated team at the Finance Ministry will oversee the distribution process, ensuring transparency.
Renters and families without utility bills in their names will still qualify by presenting proof of residency, such as a rental agreement.
The Vice President projected that the distribution process will be completed within five months, though efforts are being made to expedite the timeline.
Grants will be issued through various methods, including bank transfers, cheques, and cash disbursements where necessary.
