The Government of Guyana is preparing to sign a contract for the development of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, which aims to digitize medical records and enhance healthcare delivery across the nation.
This initiative was announced by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, as part of a broader digital health strategy intended to improve the efficiency and quality of healthcare services available to citizens.
The upcoming EHR system will integrate vital health information, including patients’ medical histories, diagnoses, medications, treatments, and test results.
This comprehensive database will enable healthcare providers to make informed decisions regarding patient care, ultimately improving the overall healthcare experience for individuals utilizing medical services throughout the country.
Funding for this significant project is being provided by the Inter-American Development Bank, with an allocation of approximately $1 billion earmarked for the current year to support EHR development and software upgrades in various areas of healthcare.
In addition to the EHR initiative, the Ministry of Health is actively working on telemedicine and telehealth solutions, which have already proven to be transformative, particularly for residents in remote communities.
An evaluation team, which includes representatives from the Mount Sinai Health System, has been established to ensure the selection of the most suitable electronic health record system.
Sixteen companies have submitted bids to design, supply, and install the new electronic system.
As part of this initiative, citizens can expect future developments, including a mobile application that will allow them to access their health information conveniently.
