The Public Works Ministry, under the leadership of Oversight Minister Juan Edghill, has achieved significant progress in the preliminary works for major road projects across Guyana.
Edghill provided updates on key initiatives, including the Good Success to Timehri Road, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, and Belfield to Rosignol projects during the year 2023.
Minister Edghill reported that the preliminary works for these projects are nearing completion, with tangible developments expected in the upcoming construction phase.
A contract has been awarded for the section from Good Success to Timehri, funded by the IDB, and major paving work is anticipated in the early months of the new year.
Furthermore, active work is set to commence on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, featuring the construction of a roundabout at the Soesdyke-East Bank junction and another at Milly’s Hideout turning into Linden.
The Linden-Soesdyke Highway has received approval for the loan, and the design consultancy contract for the Belfield to Rosignol project has been signed, setting the stage for construction to begin.
As these projects progress, Minister Edghill emphasized a more assertive approach in dealing with contractors facing severe delays.
The Cemetery Road project, valued at 1.4 billion Guyana dollars, has experienced delays, prompting a revised deadline of January 2024 for completion. If the deadline is not met, the contractor will be replaced by a dedicated contractor or the special projects unit.
Similarly, the Conversation Tree Road faces delays in its second lot, and the contractor, Kallco Guyana Inc, has received a warning to adhere to the agreed-upon timeline.
Minister Edghill’s commitment to addressing delays and ensuring timely project completion underscores the government’s dedication to advancing Guyana’s infrastructure and transportation networks.
