During the commissioning of North West Secondary School in Region One, President Dr. Irfaan Ali highlighted his government’s commitment to education, revealing an annual investment of over $700,000 per child across the nation.
This financial commitment, he explained, reflects the administration’s dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for all children, including those in hinterland areas.
President Ali underscored the comparative advantage this investment provides, as Guyana remains one of the few nations with such a high per-child expenditure for education.
He also highlighted additional initiatives such as the “Because We Care” cash grant and uniform allowance, which now total $45,000 per student.
To further support education in the hinterland, the government plans to establish state-of-the-art technical and vocational centers by 2030.
These centers aim to equip students in remote areas with world-class certifications, including City and Guilds qualifications, allowing them to excel in skilled trades directly from their communities.
The president emphasized that Region One alone has seen an educational investment of $7 billion by the Ministry of Education, with the goal of transforming schools into centers of innovation and excellence.
This vision includes early identification of students’ talents and fostering an environment that encourages creativity and innovative thinking, setting the foundation for national growth.
President Ali reiterated his government’s commitment to improving the economic and social conditions of hinterland communities, ensuring that Indigenous people actively participate in and benefit from the country’s development.
