Despite facing challenges from a prolonged dry season, farmers across the country are benefitting significantly from government interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of drought and bolstering agricultural production.
The government’s proactive approach has seen them engage directly with farmers on the ground, implementing various measures to support agricultural activities.
These interventions include drainage and irrigation works, distribution of fertilizers, provision of shade house materials, cash grants, and other requested assistance.
Farmers, who have been grappling with the impact of the dry spell, have expressed satisfaction with the support received from the government.
Lonnie Critchlow, speaking on behalf of many farmers, emphasized that the assistance provided has put them in a much better position to weather the challenges posed by the drought.
Similarly, Errol Rootoff shared his optimism about the future of the agriculture sector, noting that the support received has brightened prospects for farmers across the country.
Berryl Wallace echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude to the government for the tangible benefits they have experienced as a result of the interventions.
With a projected growth rate of 10.4% in the agriculture sector, the government remains committed to supporting farmers nationwide.
Even as efforts are focused on mitigating the effects of the dry season, preparations are underway for the upcoming wet season, traditionally occurring in May and June.
As farmers continue to receive support and encouragement from the government, there is optimism among stakeholders that the agriculture sector will thrive, contributing significantly to Guyana’s economic development and food security.
