Government Implements Groundbreaking Reforms to Empower Persons Living with Disabilities

By Nakasia Logan – January 2, 2025

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has made significant strides over the past year in improving the lives of Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD), ensuring they have better access to essential services, benefits, and support.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, highlighted these advancements during her 2024 year-end press conference.

One of the key reforms introduced by the government is the streamlined process for accessing benefits.

PLWD no longer need to reapply for assistance every year.

The introduction of a one-time application system has significantly simplified the process, ensuring that individuals can continue to receive their benefits, including monthly cash grants, without the need for repeated applications until they reach pensionable age.

Additionally, the government has expanded its support program to provide free assistive aids, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and white canes.

Each year, the number of individuals benefiting from this initiative continues to grow, making these essential tools more accessible to those in need.

Minister Persaud also noted the expansion of the public assistance program, which has seen both an increase in the financial assistance provided and a wider reach across the country.

Public assistance services are now available in all regions, ensuring that no community is left behind.

The government has also introduced options for PLWD to receive their payments through banking systems, including mobile money services like MMG, leading to a marked increase in participation.

For those unable to leave their homes, the government has introduced the “shut-in registry,” which allows individuals to have their disability pensions and payments delivered directly to their doorsteps.

In mid-December 2024, President Irfaan Ali announced an additional one-off cash grant for PLWD, further strengthening the government’s commitment to providing financial and educational support for this group.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster a more inclusive society, ensuring that PLWD have better access to education, healthcare, and financial resources.

With these ongoing reforms, the government aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for Persons Living with Disabilities, ultimately contributing to a more prosperous society for all.
