The Government of Guyana is actively considering proposals to restart mining operations at Troy’s Resources, marking a potential revitalization for the local gold mining sector.
Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat disclosed this during a recent engagement with industry stakeholders.
Troy’s Resources, an Australian company operating in Region Eight, began mining at the Karouni Mining Site in 2015 but ceased operations following a fatal accident.
After the termination of its license and the accumulation of outstanding royalties to the government, discussions have resumed regarding new investments in the area.
Minister Bharrat emphasized the government’s commitment to monitoring and regulating the mining site formerly occupied by Troy’s Resources.
He noted ongoing small-scale mining activities near the processing plant but clarified that these do not involve the main pits earmarked for future large-scale operations.
Efforts are underway to attract potential investors, both local and foreign, to develop the primary mining areas.
Additionally, consultations with the Gold and Diamond Miners Association are exploring the formation of a consortium among local miners interested in restarting operations at the site.
Regarding liabilities and unpaid royalties owed by Troy’s Resources, Minister Bharrat assured that steps are being taken by the Attorney General’s office to address these issues.
In related news, Minister Bharrat announced forthcoming allocations of designated mining areas in Mahdia to miners.
