In a significant move towards fostering inclusivity and economic empowerment, the government of Guyana, through the Small Business Bureau (SBB), has distributed grants totaling $500,000 to persons living with disabilities (PWD).
The initiative, aimed at supporting PWDs in expanding or establishing their businesses while enhancing their entrepreneurial skills, marks a crucial step towards providing equal opportunities for economic growth across various regions.
During a recent distribution event held across Regions Two, Three, Four, and 10, eight individuals living with disabilities were recipients of these small, zero-interest loans.
Expressing gratitude for the government’s support, recipients highlighted the transformative impact these grants would have on their businesses, enabling them to restock and continue their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Moreover, they encouraged other PWDs to seize similar opportunities provided by the government.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, underscored the significance of the initiative in eliminating barriers faced by PWDs in accessing finance and entrepreneurship training.
She emphasized the concept of a revolving fund, offering minimal interest rates and flexible repayment terms tailored to the specific needs of PWDs.
Minister of Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing that no individual should be left behind in the nation’s development journey.
The distribution of grants to PWDs aligns with the government’s philosophy of “One Guyana,” ensuring that every citizen has equal access to development opportunities.
Looking ahead, the government plans to expand the scope of beneficiaries in the future as more resources become available, reaffirming its dedication to empowering PWDs and fostering a more inclusive society.
The initiative reflects a proactive approach to address socio-economic challenges and promote inclusivity, positioning Guyana on a path towards greater equality and opportunity for all its citizens.
