Government Declines Engagement with US Fact-Finding Mission- Dr. Jagdeo

In an announcement during his weekly press conference at Freedom House, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, declared that the government would not engage with the ongoing fact-finding mission from the United States in Guyana.

The mission, consisting of 13 members, is considered a private initiative, and the government has opted not to meet or interact with its members.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that the government refuses to subject itself to individuals who, in their private capacity, enter the country to reinforce positions they have already defined in earlier press releases.

Despite the government’s decision, he reiterated that Guyana remains an open country.

The fact-finding mission originated after a conference in Washington DC raised questions about racial discrimination in Guyana.

Dr. Jagdeo highlighted that even before the team arrived, they issued a release insinuating that the Guyanese government discriminates based on race.

He pointed to possible linkages between the mission and a US Guyanese advocate wanted in Guyana for extortion.

The leader of the mission has expressed a desire to meet with the government, and upon completion, they plan to submit a report to the United Nations, the White House, the US Congress, and other bodies.

Dr. Jagdeo, in response, underscored his party’s commitment to the development of the entire country, irrespective of race or any other factor.
