Government Commits to Improving Worker Benefits, Regardless of Union Disagreements – Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo

In a recent statement, PPP General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing working conditions and benefits for public servants, asserting that this commitment stands firm, even in the face of disagreements with labour unions.

Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that the PPP/C government will not relinquish its responsibility to citizens in providing development and benefit packages for workers.

Responding to questions from the media regarding criticisms from trade unions regarding recent salary adjustments announced by the President, Dr. Jagdeo clarified the government’s stance.

While expressing the government’s interest in collaborating with representative bodies, Dr. Jagdeo underscored that the administration would not abdicate its responsibility to citizens, provided the initiatives bring benefits.

He clarified that if certain actions were to detract from people’s benefits, the government would take a different approach.

Dr. Jagdeo acknowledged the government’s efforts to engage with various unions, citing the direct engagement with sugar workers who were laid off.

Despite openness to collaboration with unions for workers’ betterment, Dr. Jagdeo noted that some unions tend to politicize their demands, making what he described as “outrageous demands” such as 100% or 50% increases.

Highlighting the government’s track record, Dr. Jagdeo stated that since assuming office in 2020, over 37 billion dollars have been allocated to provide salary increases for public servants.

The commitment to prioritizing worker benefits remains a key aspect of the government’s agenda.

In navigating disagreements with unions, Dr. Jagdeo affirmed the government’s dedication to ensuring that public servants receive fair compensation and improved working conditions.

The ongoing efforts underscore the administration’s resolve to balance the needs of workers with the overall goals of national development.
