During the Veterans Day Wreath Laying Ceremony held at Base Camp Ayanganna as part of the Guyana Defence Force’s annual anniversary observances, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, who is performing the functions of the President, expressed the government’s commitment to providing increased support for veterans.
Army Chief Brigadier Omar Khan outlined comprehensive plans to bolster assistance for veterans.
Key initiatives include essential repairs to the Guyana Veteran’s Home, the establishment of a well-staffed veterans affairs department, and the resumption of monthly health checks for veterans.
Additionally, Brigadier Khan highlighted a review of the retirement process to ensure military ranks receive adequate benefits upon leaving the force.
Addressing concerns raised regarding veterans’ welfare, Prime Minister Phillips pledged to tackle issues within the Defence Act.
Specifically focusing on the section known as Pensions and Gratuity Regulation, he affirmed the government’s commitment to interpreting and upgrading these regulations for enhanced support to veterans.
As the Guyana Defence Force celebrates its 58th anniversary under the theme “Moving Forward Together in Service and Dedication for One Guyana,” Prime Minister Phillips emphasized the importance of veterans’ welfare to the government.
