The Government of Guyana has allocated an additional 53.2 billion dollars in the 2025 national budget to continue its ongoing community road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance programs.
This funding follows the 73 billion dollars spent in 2024 to improve community roads across the country.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, emphasized that the focus in 2024 was on constructing internal community roads.
In 2025, however, the priority will shift to upgrading the main access roads in these areas.
Edghill noted that while the internal roads were completed, the next phase involves improving the main road arteries that connect villages to broader transportation networks.
Key infrastructure projects slated for 2025 include the construction of the Corentyne River Bridge and a new Berbice River Bridge, both crucial for improving connectivity between regions.
Furthermore, the expansion of the four-lane highway from Orange Nassau Mahaica to Sheriff Mandela and the road from Ogle to Eccles are also part of the government’s plans for the year.
The budget also includes provisions for upgrading the Linden Soesdyke highway, with plans to install 2,900 streetlights along the corridor to improve road safety and accessibility.
Additionally, the road from Schoonord to Parika and the modernization of Parika Stelling are set to be upgraded to meet the needs of a growing population.
In total, the 2025 budget appropriates 53.2 billion dollars for road and bridge rehabilitation, with further investments for river transport, air transport, and sea and river defenses.
