In a move aimed at enhancing community empowerment among Afro-Guyanese populations, the government of Guyana has disbursed $48.6 million to 27 organizations across the country.

Each group received $1.8 million to support various community development projects tailored to meet local needs.

This funding represents the second installment under the government’s initiative to bolster grassroots initiatives within Afro-Guyanese communities.

The disbursement ceremony took place at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where representatives from recipient organizations expressed appreciation for the financial support.

They highlighted the funds’ potential to significantly advance their respective organizational goals and benefit the broader African diaspora.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering people-centered development.

He noted the restructuring of funding mechanisms to ensure that the entire $48.6 million is directed towards community projects.

Previously, administrative costs had consumed a significant portion of allocated funds.

This initiative aligns with Guyana’s efforts to support the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly-Guyana and underscores the government’s dedication to promoting inclusive development and supporting marginalized communities.

The initial allocation in 2023 amounted to $100 million distributed among 55 groups, marking a continued effort by the government to empower Afro-Guyanese communities through targeted financial interventions.
