President Irfaan Ali has announced that 1,000 acres of land will be allocated for large-scale farming in Region 10 before the end of the year.
The initiative is aimed at increasing red bean and black-eyed pea production while integrating small farmers into larger investment projects to enhance agricultural output.
Currently, 77 farmers cultivate 663 acres of red beans in various locations across the region, including Ebini, Kimbia, Friendship Savannah, and Malcubiri Savannah.
However, to meet national demand and attract major investors, at least 8,000 acres need to be brought under cultivation.
The President outlined a holistic approach to expanding agricultural production, emphasizing infrastructure upgrades such as improved road networks, drying and storage facilities, and the integration of innovative technology to mitigate climate-related challenges.
The 1,000-acre allocation will complement ongoing cultivation efforts, allowing farmers to continue supplying their existing markets while scaling up production.
To support this expansion, the government, in collaboration with private developers who have invested over $600 million, will provide essential farming machinery and logistical support.
Discussions are also encouraged at the community level regarding the feasibility of diversifying production to include large-scale fruit cultivation.
President Ali reiterated the ‘One Guyana’ vision, underscoring the importance of collaboration among farmers in achieving national agricultural growth and food security.
