The Guyanese government is making significant strides towards achieving its target of allocating 50,000 house lots by 2025, according to a progress report presented to the media.
In 2023 alone, over 8000 Guyanese individuals were allocated residential house lots, with Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, expressing confidence in achieving the set target.
The breakdown for 2023 indicates that Region 4 received the majority of the allocations, totaling 7128 house lots, primarily situated on the East Coast.
Regions 2, 3, and 5 together received close to 1500 house lots. Minister Croal highlighted that when the government assumed office in 2020, there was a backlog of over 70,000 house lots, and since then, they have received approximately 13,000 new applications for residential lots.
Minister within the Housing and Water Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, reported that they have made significant progress in reducing the backlog.
Currently, about 28,368 residential lots have been allocated, including other categories like residential-commercial, religious, open public spaces, totaling over 30,000 lots.
Of the allocated lots, around 20,000 individuals have already accessed their lands, with 15,000 being young people.
Minister Croal emphasized that over 40 housing schemes have been developed or initiated across the country, and efforts will be intensified to acquire land and develop housing schemes in other regions.
The government’s commitment to addressing housing needs and providing accessible land is reflected in these ongoing initiatives.
