The Guyana national men’s football team, the Golden Jaguars, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Suriname in their opening match of League A in the Concacaf Nations League at the National Track and Field Centre.

The match began with both teams failing to capitalize on early opportunities.

In the 18th minute, Djevecio Van Der Kust scored for Suriname, giving the Dutch side a 1-0 lead.

Guyana equalized just before halftime when Omari Glasgow converted a penalty in the 43rd minute, leveling the score.

After the break, Suriname came out with renewed energy and put pressure on Guyana.

Despite several close attempts, it was Suriname who regained the lead in the 66th minute with a goal from Jaden Montnor.

Virgil Misidjan sealed the victory for Suriname with a strike in the 83rd minute, securing a 3-1 win.

Following the match, team captain Elliott Bonds expressed disappointment, citing missed chances as a key factor in the defeat.

Head coach Jamaal Shabazz also highlighted the inability to convert opportunities as a crucial element in the team’s loss.

The Golden Jaguars will next face Martinique on September 9, aiming to bounce back and improve their performance in the competition.
