The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) hosted an awareness event at the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI) to educate students on the importance of weights and measurements.
This event was part of the celebrations for World Metrology Day, observed today.
The session aimed to highlight the critical role of accurate measurements in various sectors, including business, environmental sustainability, and global development.
Lloyd David, Head of Corporate Communications at GNBS, emphasized that today’s measurements significantly impact future outcomes.
He illustrated this by explaining how environmental monitoring relies on precise measurements to assess damage and progress.
Similarly, accurate measurements are crucial in construction to ensure buildings meet necessary standards and requirements.
Shailendra Rai, Head of the Legal Metrology Department, highlighted the importance of human resources in achieving sustainability.
He explained that engaging students from technical institutes is essential because they are on the brink of entering the workforce.
By exposing them to various measurement magnitudes, they will be better prepared to apply these skills in their future careers.
During the event, students had the opportunity to interact with and use a range of measuring instruments, including scales, masses, measures, thermometers, test measures, and calipers.
These instruments, which are verified and calibrated by the GNBS, provided practical exposure to the importance and application of accurate measurements.
The event underscored the GNBS’s commitment to promoting metrology and its significance in ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency in various sectors.
