Plans are underway to reintroduce netball in Region Ten, with the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) leading the efforts.
Ailene Bowman, President of the GNA, recently met with local sports officials in Linden to discuss the revival of the sport in the region.
During the meeting, several strategies were outlined for the re-launch, including the development of playing facilities, coaching programs, and securing sponsorships.
Bowman highlighted the importance of netball, not just as a traditionally female sport but as one that can engage both boys and girls.
One of the significant challenges identified was the shortage of equipment needed to support the sport’s revival.
Bowman emphasized the need for community involvement in overcoming this hurdle, calling for support through sponsorships and fundraising events.
Bowman urged the residents of Region Ten, and Guyana as a whole, to back the reintroduction of netball.
She noted that the sport has been dormant in the country for over fifteen years and stressed the importance of providing young people with engaging activities through sports in schools and communities.
Netball was officially re-launched in Guyana earlier this year, with active programs in Regions Four and Six.
The GNA is also preparing to host the 2026 Inter-Caribbean Youth Netball Championship Tournament, which will offer an opportunity for Guyana to compete on a regional level.
The successful revitalization of netball in Region Ten will contribute to the broader goal of enhancing the sport’s presence and competitiveness in Guyana.
