Gillian Trim Highlights Importance of Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyle

By Fabiana McKlmon

A life of poor nutrition and physical inactivity can lead to adverse health outcomes, warned Gillian Trim, the Acting Director of the Food Policy Unit, during a recent discussion on healthy living.

Trim emphasized that healthy eating should not involve strict limitations, unrealistic body standards, or deprivation of favorite foods.

In today’s fast-paced world, unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles have become increasingly common.

Many people spend their leisure time sitting, whether in front of computers, televisions, or playing video games, which has negatively impacted overall health.

Trim noted that Guyana is not immune to these trends, having adopted many aspects of a Western lifestyle.

This shift includes less physical activity and more screen time, which contrasts sharply with the more active lifestyles of previous generations.

Trim also highlighted the health risks associated with processed foods, which are prevalent in many people’s diets.

These foods often contain high levels of salt, sugar, and fat, as essential nutrients are lost during processing and replaced with flavor enhancers.

Such dietary choices can lead to various health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

To counter these trends, Trim advised that healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.

She encouraged incorporating more whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, which are closer to their natural state.

These changes can significantly improve how people think, look, and feel.

Emphasizing the benefits of a balanced diet and regular physical activity, Trim’s message is clear: making small, sustainable changes in daily habits can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
