Fire Prevention Month activities in Linden commenced over the weekend with an Interfaith service held at the LINMINE Constabulary, marking the beginning of a month-long series of awareness initiatives.
This year’s observance also celebrates the 67th anniversary of the Guyana Fire Service.
The Interfaith service brought community members together for worship and reflection on the vital importance of fire safety.
During the ceremony, Station Officer C. Holder from the Guyana Fire Service highlighted the need for ongoing vigilance regarding fire safety, referencing the devastating fires at Booker’s Drugstore and the Madhia Dorm.
Holder emphasized the significant role firefighters play in the community, urging residents to prioritize fire prevention measures.
He remarked on the importance of making fire safety a personal responsibility.
Sub Officer Drepaul Saul provided a historical perspective, recalling the establishment of Fire Prevention Week following the Great Chicago Fire.
He underscored the necessity of promoting compliance with fire safety regulations and continuing public education about fire hazards.
Throughout the month, a variety of activities are planned, including community mock drills, fire safety sessions at schools, television programs, public discussions, awareness sessions, and the distribution of hampers to fire victims.
Fire Prevention Month is being observed nationwide, and Linden’s fire department encourages residents to actively engage in the planned activities to promote fire safety awareness.
