Georgetown Volleyball Academy Launches Schools Volleyball Competition

February 20, 2025

The Classic Ball Blasters, in partnership with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF), officially kicked off the Mashramani Schools Volleyball Competition at the National Gymnasium this Thursday.

The event is part of an initiative to revive volleyball in schools and engage the younger generation in the sport.

Alicia Davis, Coach of the Georgetown Volleyball Academy, created the competition with the goal of bringing volleyball back to schools.

She shared her satisfaction with the high attendance, expressing her belief that volleyball remains popular in Guyana.

Davis explained the process behind organizing the competition, stating, “The academy is open to anyone, and from the data, we saw participants from various schools like Saints, Roses, and Bishops. With this strong foundation, I decided we could have a school tournament after several years of nurturing young talent,” she said.

The event’s success has sparked hopes for future tournaments.

Davis believes the competition will serve as a platform to identify emerging volleyball talent that could represent Guyana in regional competitions such as the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) and Caribbean Games.

“We are hoping to continue this initiative every two months, allowing us to scout athletes who will be prepared to compete at higher levels over the next few years,” Davis added.

The competition features six schools battling for the championship, and with the support of the Government of Guyana, Davis is optimistic that the GVF will be able to organize such tournaments regularly.
