Georgetown, the bustling capital of Guyana, is witnessing further infrastructure development to address the growing volume of traffic entering and exiting the city.
Among the latest projects is the widening of the road along the seawalls, a crucial artery for commuters.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, highlighted that the expansion of the Seawall road is prompted by the increasing use of this route as an alternative during rush hours, particularly by motorists from the heavy East Coast Demerara traffic.
This alternative route serves to alleviate congestion on the main artery, Carifesta Avenue, which leads into the city.
The initiative to widen the Seawall road will necessitate the regularization of vending and other activities along the route.
Minister Edghill emphasized that such expansions are essential components of the government’s broader efforts to reduce traffic congestion and enhance the country’s road network.
This project is part of a larger endeavor, with several other roads slated for widening, including Homestretch Avenue, where work has already commenced, and Carifesta Avenue, scheduled for later this year.
Minister Edghill underscored the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure to enhance mobility and accessibility across the city.
Moreover, pedestrian safety remains a top priority in the implementation of these road works.
Minister Edghill expressed concerns over reckless driving behavior, where drivers often pose risks to pedestrians by not allowing them safe passage on pavements.
As the project moves forward, efforts will be made to ensure pedestrian safety measures are enforced alongside road expansions.
This holistic approach aims to create safer and more efficient roadways for all road users.
