The Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) has achieved a significant milestone by receiving certification as the first Designated Kidney Transplant Centre in Guyana.

This accreditation, granted in accordance with the Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Act of 2022, marks a pivotal moment in the country’s healthcare landscape.

The certification ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health’s Boardroom, where the official certificate was handed over to the hospital.

Dr. Frank Anthony, the Minister of Health, emphasized that this certification reflects the hospital’s commitment to adhering to international best practices in healthcare delivery.

He commended the efforts of the hospital staff and administration for their dedication to achieving this milestone.

Dr. Smolana Swan, the Transplant Coordinator at GPHC, highlighted the complexity of the process involved in obtaining this certification.

She acknowledged the collaborative efforts of numerous individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to meet the stringent requirements for designation as a kidney transplant center.

Dr. Swan expressed gratitude for the collective effort that culminated in this achievement.

The Human Organ and Tissue Transplant Act of 2022 provides the legal framework necessary for the removal and transplantation of human organs, tissues, cells, and biofluids.

This legislation ensures that transplant procedures adhere to established ethical and medical guidelines, safeguarding the well-being of both donors and recipients.

The certification of GPHC as a Designated Kidney Transplant Centre signifies a significant advancement in Guyana’s healthcare infrastructure.

It opens up new avenues for patients in need of kidney transplants, providing them with access to specialized care and treatment within the country.

This achievement underscores Guyana’s commitment to improving healthcare services and enhancing medical capabilities for the benefit of its citizens.
