Georgetown Public Hospital Addresses Backlog for Knee and Hip Replacement Surgeries

By Delicia Janneire

The Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) is actively working to reduce its backlog of knee and hip replacement surgeries, following President Ali’s call to action during his engagement with medical professionals on April 5.

A recent effort by the Orthopedics Department at GPHC saw a team of medical professionals performing six joint replacement surgeries, including four hips and two knees.

Dr. Kaaleshwar Ramcharran, one of the lead surgeons, highlighted the mission’s purpose to address the significant backlog of joint replacement surgeries at GPHC.

He explained that while weekend surgeries have been a routine practice, the recent effort marks a renewed commitment to tackling the backlog.

These surgeries will be conducted based on availability, allowing the hospital to respond effectively to the challenges posed by the high demand for emergency surgeries.

Additionally, members of the surgical team benefitted from the training aspect of the mission, providing invaluable practical experiences for registrars, residents, and junior doctors.

Dr. Ramcharran was joined by Dr. Fawcett Jeffrey and Dr. Zhou Chou in leading the surgical procedures, underscoring the collaborative effort within the medical team to address this pressing issue.

The initiative at GPHC reflects a proactive approach to enhancing healthcare services and meeting the needs of patients requiring joint replacement surgeries.
