The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown is actively exploring the establishment of a drive-thru market between Orange Walk and Cummings Street as a structured solution to the persistent street vending challenges in the Robb Street area.

City Mayor Alfred Mentore disclosed the plans during an exclusive interview with NCN News, stating that engineers are currently assessing the cost of constructing a covered market space in the designated area.

Funds have already been allocated to advance the project, which aims to bring greater organization and control to street vending in the city.

The initiative comes in response to multiple legal actions taken by local residents who have raised concerns about congestion, traffic flow disruptions, and public safety hazards caused by vendors operating along Robb Street, particularly between Alexander and Bourda Streets.

Mayor Mentore acknowledged the challenges faced by the council in addressing these longstanding issues.

He emphasized that the proposed market space would serve as a designated area for vending while gradually clearing street-side vending spots to ensure better regulation.

Efforts to relocate street vendors are not new, as the Merriman’s Mall area has previously been identified as a potential vending zone.

However, with ongoing complaints and legal challenges from residents, the city is now taking additional steps to implement a more sustainable solution.

While the new drive-thru market remains in the planning stages, its implementation is expected to create a more structured and accessible space for vendors, while alleviating congestion in the affected areas.
