City Mayor Alfred Mentore has come under scrutiny from PPP/C councilors Patricia Chase-Greene and Steven Jacobs over his recent unilateral decision-making, which they argue undermines the authority of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
The concerns were raised during Monday’s statutory meeting, following Mentore’s approval of several business-related requests, including parking priorities in the city.
Councilors objected to the mayor’s handling of these decisions, emphasizing that they were made without prior consultation.
Mentore defended his actions, citing urgency as the reason for moving forward without seeking the council’s approval.
He maintained that the council had granted him the authority to implement certain measures when necessary.
However, Chase-Greene and Jacobs argued that municipal administration should be guided by collective decisions, rather than individual discretion.
Chase-Greene also warned against setting precedents that could lead to preferential treatment for businesses.
Despite the objections, Mentore stood by his decisions, stating that they were reasonable and non-negotiable.
