This week, the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court opened its doors to the public for its first-ever ‘open day’, providing a unique opportunity for citizens to gain insights into the court’s operations.

The event featured live court proceedings from both the Traffic Court and the Criminal Court, allowing attendees to observe judicial processes firsthand.

Guided tours of the courthouse were offered, alongside informative sessions with magistrates and court staff.

Visitors engaged in presentations and participated in Q&A sessions about court proceedings.

Exhibition booths highlighted various court proceedings including criminal cases, civil matters, domestic violence issues, and cases involving children.

Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse expressed the purpose behind the open day, stating, “The rationale for this open day is to alert members of the public that every member of the public can access justice.”

Acting Chancellor, Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, commended the initiative, emphasizing its role in demystifying the court process and enhancing public engagement.

She remarked, “The open day is aimed at helping the Judiciary to demystify the court process and help the Judiciary to engage with members of the public. It is a system of building bridges for better services to the people of Guyana.”

The success of this inaugural event has paved the way for similar initiatives at all 52 magistrates’ courts across Guyana, aiming to foster transparency and accessibility in the judicial system.
