The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has announced the commencement of the claims and objections period starting on January 2, 2024.
GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward, emphasized the significance of the claims and objections period to ensure the accuracy and transparency of the official list of voters.
The primary goal is to provide every eligible voter with equal access and opportunity for inclusion on the list.
During this period, citizens are encouraged to scrutinize the preliminary list of electors, which will be posted countrywide in all registration divisions and sub-divisions.
The verification process is crucial to confirm the accuracy of individuals’ particulars and ensure the eligibility of all listed persons.
Ward clarified that any transaction related to claims and objections must be conducted in person, emphasizing that the law does not facilitate overseas registration transactions.
Therefore, individuals must be physically present in Guyana to complete registration transactions.
To facilitate the two-week claims and objections period from January 2 to 15, 2024, GECOM will extend its operational hours.
Offices will be open from Sunday to Sunday, working from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 10 am to 2 pm on weekends.
GECOM reminds participants that only valid and original source documents, such as passports, birth certificates, or naturalization certificates, are acceptable during any transaction.
The Claims and Objections period initiated by GECOM reflects the Commission’s commitment to upholding transparency, accuracy, and fairness in Guyana’s electoral process.
