The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) football club displayed their dominance in the inaugural Maid Marian Wheat Up Women’s Cup 2024, claiming the championship title at the National Training Center in Providence.
The nine-team league, which kicked off on November 30th, saw GDF A remain unbeaten throughout the league phase with three wins, finishing top of their group ahead of Fruta Conquerors.
Guyana Police Force also topped their group, edging out GDF B.
In the semifinals, GDF B thrashed Fruta Conquerors 6-0, while GDF A narrowly defeated Guyana Police Force 1-0 to secure their place in the final.
The final was a one-sided affair as GDF A dominated, hammering their B team 7-1.
Sandra Johnson starred with a hat-trick, while Glendy Lewis scored twice, and Jalade Trim and Patsy Walker each netted once.
Anastasa Horsham scored GDF B’s lone goal. With their victory, GDF A walked away with half a million dollars, while GDF B received $200,000 for second place.
In the third-place match, Amanda McKenzie, Shontelle Greene, and Flourice Waldorn each scored twice, leading the Guyana Police Force to a 10-0 win over Fruta Conquerors, earning $100,000.
The six-week, 7-a-side competition also featured teams from Lethem, Santos, Bartica, and Potaro Strikers.
The tournament was sponsored by the National Milling Company through their Wheat-Up brand, with support from Guyana Beverages.
