The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) marked its 135th anniversary at its annual awards ceremony on Thursday, emphasizing the need for a cultural shift and shared responsibility among government, the private sector, and citizens to ensure sustainable development.
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, delivering the feature address, underscored the importance of collective responsibility in Guyana’s ongoing economic and infrastructural transformation.
He stressed that national growth must go beyond physical advancements to include personal and cultural growth.
GCCI President Kester Hutson highlighted the chamber’s enduring commitment to private sector development.
He emphasized the need for comprehensive labour and migration policies to address workforce demands while safeguarding jobs and interests of Guyanese workers.
Hutson also advocated for the protection of migrant workers against exploitation and called for internal capacity building and skills transfer to benefit Guyanese.
Hutson further recommended a review of the Local Content Act to expand its scope beyond the current 40 areas and address existing loopholes, ensuring that the Act continues to benefit local businesses and workers.
The event celebrated the achievements of various organizations and individuals, with Guyana Chronicle receiving the award for Best Media, Geraldo Alphonso honored as Business Executive of the Year, and Xpress Business Solutions recognized alongside other outstanding contributors to the business community.
The ceremony reaffirmed the critical role of collaboration and strategic planning in Guyana’s developmental journey, as the country experiences rapid economic growth.
