The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) successfully conducted a full-scale emergency exercise at the Eugene F. Correira International Airport on Friday.
This drill, which is held every two years, aims to test and improve the airport’s preparedness to handle potential emergency scenarios effectively.
The exercise simulated an incident involving an ATR 72 aircraft with 44 passengers on board that overshot the runway.
Responders were tasked with managing the aftermath, including treating injuries, handling casualties, and coordinating emergency services.
According to the GCAA, the exercise is crucial for evaluating the response time and efficiency of airport personnel, emergency teams, and onboard crew members.
It also serves as a training opportunity to enhance protocols and address potential gaps in emergency management.
The drill took place at a designated crash site within the airport and involved ambulance services, medical teams, and other emergency responders.
The GCAA emphasized that such simulations are vital for maintaining high safety standards and ensuring readiness for real-life emergencies.
The exercise underscores the GCAA’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures and operational efficiency within Guyana’s aviation sector.
