President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Saturday praised the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) for nearly two centuries of service, innovation and contribution to national development, describing the institution as a critical pillar in Guyana’s financial evolution.

Speaking at the bank’s 190th anniversary celebration held at the Guyana Marriott Hotel Georgetown, President Ali congratulated the bank’s directors, management, staff, customers and regulators for helping to build one of Guyana’s most enduring institutions.

“This bank has stood strong in celebration of 190 years of service to the people of Guyana and this region,” he said.

He pointed to GBTI’s corporate vision as evidence of its long-standing commitment to innovation, noting that even the construction of its headquarters reflected a forward-looking philosophy.

The President highlighted the institution’s willingness to expand into new regions and support national development initiatives long before such investments became mainstream.

Recalling the opening of the bank’s branch in Region Nine, President Ali said GBTI demonstrated courage and strategic foresight at a time when few institutions were prepared to venture into hinterland development.

The Head of State also commended the bank’s early support for major economic and cultural initiatives, noting its involvement in programmes such as the Building Expo and Guyana’s export promotion efforts.

“They were the first institution to sign on every time for Guyana export,” he said, adding that the bank consistently gave back to customers through major national events.

President Ali described GBTI as an institution that has continuously adapted to changing economic realities while maintaining a strong Guyanese identity.

“This bank is innovating and building systems not to meet today’s requirements, but to meet the requirements of 100 years from now,” he said.

He expressed confidence that GBTI’s continued growth and innovation will remain central to Guyana’s expanding financial landscape and broader national transformation.
