The Gas-to-Energy Project is facing delays but is now expected to be completed in the latter half of 2025.
Winston Brassington, the Project Lead, reported that while the initial timeline aimed for completion by the end of this year, unexpected delays in civil works, including site preparation and soil stabilization, have pushed back the deadline.
To address these delays, discussions are ongoing with all stakeholders to ensure the revised schedule is met.
The project includes the construction of the Natural Gas Liquid facility and a combined cycle power plant at the Wales site, both critical components of the initiative.
Furthermore, new transmission lines are being installed to connect the Wales project site to locations such as Garden of Eden on the East Bank of Demerara and Goedverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara.
A new national control center is also being built to manage the distribution of power generated from the project.
The Gas-to-Energy initiative consists of five main components: laying a pipeline to bring natural gas onshore, constructing the power plant and NGL facility, installing the necessary transmission lines, building the control center, and upgrading the existing power distribution infrastructure.
Once completed, the project is projected to save approximately US$11 million each month on fuel costs and significantly reduce electricity prices by around 50%, while also providing a more stable and reliable energy supply to consumers in the region.
