Gas-to-Energy Project to Accelerate Agro-Processing Growth in Guyana

Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha Minister of Agriculture

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has highlighted the significant impact of the Gas-to-Energy project on the expansion of the agriculture sector, particularly in agro-processing.

The project, located in Wales, is expected to provide a substantial boost to the local agro-processing industry.

During his end-of-year press conference, Minister Mustapha revealed that over ten agro-processing facilities were constructed across Guyana in 2023.

These facilities aim to produce more value-added commodities, contributing to the growth of the agriculture sector.

However, Minister Mustapha emphasized the need for cheaper energy to enable these facilities to operate at full capacity.

He stated that the gas-to-shore energy project is crucial for providing the necessary energy resources to support the agro-processing industry.

The Minister discussed ongoing efforts to attract investors, noting a recent discussion with an investor interested in producing fertilizers.

Such investments have the potential to further enhance the agriculture sector’s capabilities.

The Guyana Marketing Corporation has been actively collaborating with agro-processors to ensure that their products meet international standards.

This involves providing training and consultations to enhance the quality of locally processed agricultural goods.

The Gas-to-Energy project is part of the broader national strategy to stimulate economic growth and development by leveraging energy resources to support key sectors like agriculture.
