The government added over 186 Megawatts of new power to the grid since August 2020 and according to Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh, this figure will be more than doubled as the government pursues both Phases of Gas to Energy (GTE), a third plant in Berbice and the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project.

As energy demand has grown over the past five years, so too has the PPP/C government’s investments in the energy sector.

From 2020, over 186 Megawatts of power has been added to the grid, with Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh explaining some of the areas that benefitted.

A total of 46 solar mini grids were also installed, while 37,230 solar powered home systems were distributed.

Dr. Singh revealed that $123.3 Billion was expended in developing the energy sector during this time.

We are proud that we will be the party in the government to build a power plant that will double the energy generation capacity of our country, while those on that side of the house could not deliver one megawatt of power fired by our gas resources, leaving the gas resources languishing and unutilised. And they have the audacity to come and quibble about whether it will finish in September,” Dr Singh added.

Dr. Singh assured that the PPP/C would not only complete the first and second plants but also build a third, gas powered plant in Palmyra, Berbice.

The 165-Megawatt Amaila Falls Hydropower Project is another initiative Dr. Singh assured will be pursued.
