Recently, the Supreme Court witnessed a solemn gathering of legal dignitaries as they convened for a Full Court sitting to pay tribute to the esteemed late Justice Prem Persaud.

The event saw Acting Chancellor of the Judiciary, Justice Yonette Cummings Edwards, and Attorney General & Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall among the distinguished speakers.

Throughout the proceedings, colleagues and associates reminisced about Justice Persaud, recalling him as a compassionate mentor with a keen intellect and an unwavering commitment to justice.

His methodical approach to legal matters and his compassionate demeanor toward all who appeared before him were lauded by those who knew him well.

Acting Chancellor Justice Yonette Cummings Edwards emphasized Justice Persaud’s profound knowledge of the law and his significant contributions to Guyana’s legal landscape.

She described him as a humble individual, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall, reflecting on his close friendship with Justice Persaud, spoke passionately about his exceptional character and the legacy he leaves behind.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the government and the legal profession, Nandlall highlighted Justice Persaud’s invaluable service.

Director of Public Prosecution Shalimar Ali Hack also shared words of praise for Justice Persaud, recognizing him as a notable jurist whose contributions enhanced public trust in the legal system.

Justice Prem Persaud, who passed away in November 2023, served with distinction for 37 years, initially as a magistrate and later as a Justice of Appeal.

His dedication to justice and integrity left an indelible mark on Guyana’s judicial system.
