–even as panic buying continues
-by NaAsia Bristol
Fuel concerns are easing tonight, even as panic buying continues in some areas including the capital. Authorities are assuring the public that there is no national shortage, despite long lines and reports of empty pumps at some service stations.
While some gas stations across Georgetown reported not having fuel, General Manager of GuyOil, Molly Hassan, has assured that the company is in receipt of fuel in stock and continues to serve the public.
She noted that all GuyOil service stations remain operational, with locations at Regent Street, Providence, and Sheriff Street offering 24-hour service to meet the increased demand.
Hassan is also urging citizens to remain calm and patient, even as concerns persist. These assurances come as Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed that fuel is available in the country, explaining that a delayed shipment has already arrived and is currently being discharged, with additional supplies expected in the coming days.
However, despite these statements, panic buying that began yesterday has continued into today, with long lines of vehicles forming at service stations. In some cases, motorists spent hours waiting to access fuel, while others were seen hoarding.
The Guyana Energy Agency has since issued safety guidelines, warning against improper fuel storage and urging the use of approved containers to reduce the risk of fire and injury.
Authorities maintain that the disruption is temporary and are again appealing to the public to avoid panic buying as the situation stabilises.
