Frank Wadell and Mishka Beharry Triumph in National Junior Badminton Championships

In a thrilling conclusion to the National Sports Commission Junior National Badminton Singles Tournament, Frank Wadell and Mishka Beharry emerged as the standout performers in the Under-19 category.

The tournament, which concluded on Thursday night, showcased impressive displays of skill and determination from young athletes across various age groups.

In the boys’ Under-19 singles final, Frank Wadell displayed his prowess by defeating Berbice’s Xavio Alexander in straight sets.

Wadell clinched the first set 21-18 and followed it up with a commanding performance in the second set, securing victory with a score of 21-15, thus claiming the National Under-19 championship title.

Meanwhile, Mishka Beharry demonstrated her dominance in both the Under-17 and Under-19 girls’ categories.

In the Under-19 girls’ singles final, Beharry overwhelmed Leshaunte Berkley with scores of 21-6 and 21-7 in straight sets.

Earlier in the evening, she had secured the Under-17 title with a comprehensive victory over Malia Haley, winning 21-4 and 21-13.

The tournament also saw Ruel Rambirche shine in the Under-15 division, where he triumphed over Egan Bulkan with scores of 21-8 and 21-6.

Additionally, Ethan Bulkan claimed victory in the Under-13 boys’ singles category, while Anjaneysa Godette and Gabrielle Felix emerged as champions in the Under-11 girls and Under-15 girls singles, respectively.

Reflecting on the success of the tournament, Emily Ramdhani, head of the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA), praised the participants for their outstanding performances.

She emphasized the importance of readiness for upcoming competitions, urging players to prepare for the next junior doubles and mixed doubles tournament scheduled for October.

The tournament will commence in schools and culminate in a grand competition at the National Gymnasium, highlighting ongoing efforts to nurture talent and promote badminton at the grassroots level in Guyana.
