Government has significantly expanded its temporary morgue capacity in Region Two as recovery efforts continue following the MV Barima tragedy, with four refrigerated containers now deployed to support the identification and dignified handling of victims.
Providing an update on Tuesday, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said the additional refrigerated storage was installed overnight at Suddie to ensure authorities are prepared as the search, rescue and recovery operation progresses.
He explained that the expanded capacity forms part of the government’s recovery plan, allowing medical personnel to properly preserve remains while identification and post-mortem examinations are completed.
The objective is also to identify victims as quickly as possible and release their bodies to grieving families without unnecessary delays so funeral arrangements can begin.
At least 11 identified victims have already been returned to their home communities at the request of their families, while regional authorities continue to assist with repatriation and burial arrangements.
