Four Guyanese Scholars Awarded Prestigious Chevening Scholarships for UK Studies

In a momentous occasion, four exceptional Guyanese scholars have been granted the esteemed Chevening Scholarships, allowing them to pursue master’s degrees across diverse disciplines in the United Kingdom. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chevening Scholarship Programme, underscoring its enduring commitment to nurturing global talent.

The recipients and their respective fields of study are as follows:

  • Keisha Edwards: Master’s in Fashion Business Management
  • Joshua Benn: LLM in Oil, Gas, and Renewable Energy Law
  • Deanna Walcott: MSc in Occupational Safety, Health and Environment
  • Amrita Narine: MSc in Data Science and AI for the Creative Industries

Each scholar expressed their gratitude and enthusiasm for this invaluable opportunity. Keisha Edwards, the first designer from Guyana to be selected, described her journey as “incredible” and expressed her elation.

Joshua Benn emphasized the transformative nature of the Chevening scholarship, highlighting that it’s a venture open to all, encouraging self-belief and dismissing self-doubt.

Deanna Walcott offered practical advice to prospective applicants, urging them to take action and seize the opportunity, emphasizing the importance of well-prepared essays, networking, and articulating reasons for choosing the UK for their studies.

Amrita Narine expressed her excitement about both exploring the UK and subsequently contributing her acquired skill sets to Guyana upon her return.

British High Commissioner, Jane Miller, expressed pride in providing this developmental initiative to Guyanese scholars. Over the past four decades, more than 150 scholarships have been awarded to Guyanese, further solidifying the enduring bond between Guyana and the UK.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, himself a former awardee, urged the recipients to not only focus on their studies but also to actively engage in networking and to give back to their communities.

The Chevening Scholarship, established in 1983, provides eligible individuals the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees at any UK University across various disciplines.

The next round of scholarship applications will open on September 12 and will conclude in November, offering a fresh cohort of bright minds the chance to further their education in the UK.
